A zoning permit may be required when you make interior or exterior modifications to a building, change the use of a building, or simply put up a sign. If you are just starting a business (including home-based), moving into a new commercial space, or making any significant changes in the type of business you are running, you should check with P&Z before you move forward. The P&Z staff want to help you avoid potential problems and wasted time.

Obtaining a P&Z permit may take anywhere from 3 hours to a few months depending on the project. If at first your project isn’t approved, there is an appeal process. Pricing varies by project, call BC (802-476-0245) to determine pricing for your project or to answer any other questions you may have. Barre City also has numerous review guides available at their website.

Barre City Permitting:

Building and Housing (802-476-0250) can tell you if you need a building, plumbing or electrical permit (a permit is required for each trade required to complete the project), provide you with the appropriate applications, and schedule your inspections. Permit approval can take up to a week, but most are issued without delay. Cost for each permit is based on your projects construction cost. You will need certified professionals doing your trade work and a professional to sign off on your project’s site plan. Contact BC B&H at 802-476-0250 or an inspector at 802-476-0263.

Barre City Taxes:

Real Estate Tax: Based on assessed value, for commercial and residential property owners. 802-476-0244 (BC).

Business Personal Property Tax: For all businesses in BT. Request a form from the Town Assessor’s office, file in April of each year. If you do not file for this tax, you may be subject to an estimated assessment. 802-476-0244 (BC).

Tax Incentives: Your business may be eligible to apply for tax stabilization or other tax incentives. To inquire, call the BC Manager (802-476-0240).
